Colorado Taps Anheuser-Busch Brewery as a Leader in Statewide Environmental Excellence

Energy Efficient Lighting, Wildlife Habitat Preservation among Efforts at Brewery

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Nov. 18, 2009) – The Anheuser-Busch Fort Collins brewery was named a Gold Leader in the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Environmental Leadership Program, a statewide environmental recognition and reward program. The brewery was recognized along with several dozen other Colorado companies for its environmental achievements and continued commitment to environmental excellence.

“Anheuser-Busch routinely evaluates policies, programs and practices to minimize the impact of our operations on the environment,” said Kevin Fahrenkrog, general manager of Anheuser-Busch’s Fort Collins brewery. “Our goals this year include reducing water use by 7.5 percent and energy use by 4 percent from 2008 use. Through dedicated planning and participation in programs such as the Environmental Leadership Program, we’re motivated and committed to achieving these goals.”

The Colorado Environmental Leadership Program is a statewide environmental recognition and reward program administered by the Department of Public Health and Environment’s Office of Environmental Integration and Sustainability. The program is open to all Colorado businesses, industries, offices, educational institutions, municipalities, government agencies, communities, nonprofits and other organizations. To be eligible for the Gold Level, an organization must have, among other things, a fully operational, facility-specific Environmental Management System with defined goals.

Recent environmental initiatives undertaken at the Fort Collins brewery include retrofitting part of the brewery and warehouse with energy efficient lighting. The project is estimated to save more than 1,656,000 kilowatt hours annually due to decreased electric demand. The brewery also maintains a Wildlife Habitat Council-certified wildlife habitat on its property. The eight-acre habitat contains numerous native plant species, brush piles for small mammal sheltering, a butterfly garden, fox den, raptor perch and walking path. There are plans to further develop the habitat for use in educating community youth on native plant and animal species.

The brewery was honored by Governor Bill Ritter, the Department of Public Health and Environment, Pollution Prevention Advisory Board and the Colorado Environmental Partnership at the 10th annual Environmental Leadership Awards at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts on Oct. 20.

“All of our dedicated employees really drive the success of our environmental initiatives,” said Bob Kaempfe, senior environmental health and safety manager at the brewery. “We have several teams focused on improving our environmental performance and hundreds of employees committed to improving the local environment and quality of life through individual and community efforts.”
